Last week we had a hilly practice in preparation for the Balmoral Run with our great friend and ten time marathon runner Graeme. We met in the forest car park at the bottom of Scotly Hill near Banchory and once we were all kitted out we set off almost immediately climbing for about two miles until we reached the top where there is the most amazing round tower that provides superb views across the Deeside valley.
I remembered the many times I walked up this hill with my brother and sister when I was really wee – it seemed such a mountain. Back then we reached the top mum gave us a milky way to keep our spirits up. Nowadays she would be giving us a Clif Bar or Naked Bar as a snack.
We took a different route down finishing back at the car park and the whole run was just short of five miles. A great run and amazing to discover that Graeme, who is a local councillor had achieved so many marathons with a best time of three hours and two minutes. He’s not doing too badly for a 67 year old!
Our new Asaic trail shoes were great, nice and grippy but one foot keeps going a bit numb so I need to keep slackening them off but otherwise a great investment.
